New LG Chairmen To Emerge
… As RSIEC Conducts Council Polls, Saturday
In a couple of weeks, new Local Government Council chairmen will be sworn into office as the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) conducts elections for chairmen and councilors in the 23 local government areas on Satursday April 17, 2021.
In the absence of a formidable opposition against the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following the boycott of the polls by the All Progressives Congress, the PDP candidates are likely to sweep the polls.
Among those expected to emerge as chairmen are a former leader of Rivers State House of Assembly and former APC stalwart, Hon. Chidi Lloyd for Emohua Local Government Area and a former state vice chairman of the PDP, Barr. Vincent Nemieboka for Ogu/Bolo Local Government Area.
Governor Nyesom Wike had stated that only council chairmen who proved themselves through project execution in their first term would be allowed to return as fifteen chairmen failed to get second term tickets.
According to sources, some of the dumped chairmen were victims of interests of political leaders close to the governor while in some cases, the chairmen were victims of their own actions as they were torn between godfathers who felt dissatisfied and wanted some other persons for the position.
“I must tell you some of the incumbent chairmen had their own personal baggages which were brought to the notice of the governor and he used it to stop them from returning for a second term. For instance, there was the case of a council chairmen who slapped a woman who came to demand debt owed her by the council boss. The woman took the matter to the wife of a prominent politician close to the governor. Another person was chosen from the same ward as his replacement,” the source said.
The Vortex investigation learnt that in Ikwerre Local Government Area, some powerful politicians were determined to replace Hon. Samuel Nwanosike but his sacrifices and loyalty to the party during previous state elections in the area could not be ignored even as his performance speak volume in his favour
The governor was said to have also considered that Ikwerre Local Government needed a strong personality to ensure the PDP holds sway against the All Progressives Congress (APC) where former Governor Chibuike Amaechi hails from.
For Etche Local Government, where the incumbent Hon. Obinna Anyanwu is due to return, it was learnt that the swell of opposition against him almost overwhelmed the Governor in favour of Chief Orwell Onyeso’s choice.
Hon. Chisom Christian of Omuma local government’s return defies permutations as there were claims of non performance. Fingers point to a member of the Rivers State Assembly said to be a prominent godfather in Omuma politics.
Rowland Sekibo of Akuku-Toru Local Government Area is seen as one of the chairmen deserving a second term due to what is described as his superlative performance and level headedness.
Apart from identifiable projects executed in the area, Hon. Sekibo is seen as a formidable politician who can hold his own at all times.
Other chairmen, who are billed to return include Hon. Hope Ikiriko of Ahoada West and David Irimagha of Bonny Local Government.
