Rivers LG Polls Hold April 17, 2021
Political activities are in top gear at the local government level as the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has slated elections for chairmanship and councillorship positions in the 23 local government areas of the state for the 17th of April, 2021.
Chairman of the commission, Rtd. Justice George Omereji who announced the date during a stakeholders meeting attended by registered political parties, civil society groups, youths, women groups, clergy, traditional rulers and the media appealed for the support of the political class towards ensuring free and fair elections in the state
The RSIEC chairman told the stakeholders at the meeting that consultations were ongoing with the various security agencies and opinion leaders in the state to ensure maximum security during the electioneering campaigns and subsequent elections, assuring that the commission will provide a level playing environment for the political parties involved in the exercise.
“Democracy has taken root in Nigeria and it must be assured at the grassroots. RSIEC is determined to conduct the freest and most credible local government elections in Nigeria. We will ensure equal opportunity for all contestants at the polls. We will be resolute and impartial in our conduct,” the RSIEC boss stated.
The RSIEC guidelines launched at the event provides the sequence of activities in the elections, the processes for conduct of primary elections by the political parties, the time for campaigns by the candidates, and substitution of candidates leading to the local government election on April, 17, 2021.
