RSIEC Begins Sensitization For Local Government Polls

The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has assured of its resolve to conduct the most credible local government elections in Nigeria.

Chairman of the commission, Retired Hon. Justice George Omereji who led other commissioners in the commission on the sensitization tours charged voters to fully participate in the election of leaders at the grassroot level of government.

Addressing stakeholders in Etche Local Government Area, Justice Omereji assured that the commission will not condone any form of electoral malpractices in the coming local government election. 

He said RSIEC will ensure a level playing field for all parties, adding that any staff of the commission found to be involved in electoral fraud will be sanctioned.

Chairman of the Local Government, Hon. Obinna Anyanwu in his response, expressed the determination of the local government and the people of the area to support the commission to conduct credible election.

The commission also visited Bonny, Emuoha, Port Harcourt, Asari-Toru Local Government Areas where Retired Justice George Omereji addressed stakeholders on the need to fully participate in the electoral process.

He said the commission decided to undertake the sensitization exercise to create the awareness on the responsibilities of the reconstituted members of the electoral body and their determination to rekindle the confidence of the electorate to participate in the local election.

The Commission also visited the Moslem Community leaders in Elelenwo in Obio/Akpo Local Government Area, where the Chairman, of RSIEC urged residents in the state including Christians and Moslems to participate in all elections conducted in the community. appealed to leaders of the Moslem Community in the area to pass the message from the commission to conduct credible elections in the local government election.

Chief Imam of Elelenwo Mosque Yinus Ganba Usman who speaks at the event, assured the RSIEC officials of the support of Moslems in the area, adding that the message from the commission will be communicated to its members.

In all the areas visited by the commissioner, the stakeholders made contributions and ask questions on issues of interests, while the RSIEC Chairman, provided responses.

Chairman of the commission, Justice Genge Omereji equally stated that the commission will meet with various group to enlighten the people on the need to support and participate in organizing a free, fair and credible election in the state.
