BUHARI DEFENDS EDO POLLS
…Insists on Transparent Elections
President Muhammadu Buhari said he is committed to transparent elections and has urged Nigerians to be encouraged by the outcome of the Edo State Governorship election.
The President said desperation by politicians is one of the factors impeding free and fair elections in Nigeria.
In his Independence Day broadcast, President Buhari reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring free and fair elections in the country despite attempts by some power-hungry politicians to influence the electoral process thereby subverting the will of the people.
He said, “The recent build-up and eventual outcome of the Edo state elections should encourage Nigerians that it is my commitment to bequeath to this country processes and procedures that would guarantee that the people’s votes count. The problems with our electoral process are mainly human-induced as a desperate desire for power leads to desperate attempt to gain power and office”.
Buhari added that the desperation of such people “leads to compromising the judiciary to upturn legitimate decisions of the people”, and called on Nigerians to support the enthronement of the Rule of Law by avoiding actions which compromise the judiciary.
The US government imposed a visa ban on some individuals for undermining election processes in Kogi and Bayelsa governorship elections in 2019 in the build up to the Edo governorship election.
With President Buhari declaring his believe in a transparent, free, fair and credible electoral process, the Ondo governorship election will prove the readiness of relevant stakeholders to embrace credible electoral processes.
