Don’t Pay For Writing Materials, Bail Is Free –CP
Rivers State Commissioner of Police, CP Joseph Mukan has warned officers and men in all police formations in the state to desist from demanding money from members of the public before granting bail to suspects.
CP Mukan who gave the warning while speaking in a radio programme monitored in Port Harcourt declared that bail for any offence in the country was free and that citizens should not give money to any police officer to secure bail for suspected offenders.
He urged members of the public to report any policeman demanding for money as a condition for granting bail in any police station in the state; adding that collection of money for bail to suspects is a criminal offence.
He warned that he will deal decisively with any officer found culpable in the offence.
The Police boss also denied allegations that police officers usually demand for money from suspects to procure writing materials to take their statements in police stations.
While condemning such acts, CP Mukan explained that it is the responsibility of the police station to provide writing materials for suspects to enter their statement, maintaining that Nigeria police authorities have made adequate provisions for documents and materials for use in all the police stations.
The CP and called on the public to report such demands to his office for action.
