30 Parties Flood INEC For Registration
As the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) seeks to reduce the number of Political Parties in the country, more than 30 Political Parties has applied to the electoral body for registration.
Rivers State Chairman of Inter-party Advisory Council, Chima Nsirim, told newsmen during a courtesy call on the State Chairman of the Peoples Democracy Party (PDP) Bro. Felix Obua in Port Harcourt that the action of INEC to deregister 74 Political Parties out of the 92 registration of political groups, was illegal adding that the action was on infringement on the rights of the parties and members freedom of association as enshrined in the 1999 constitution.
Nsirim disclosed that more political parties have continued to seek INEC registration, stressing that over 30 political parties have already applied to INEC for recognition.
He accused the electoral body of sabotage emphasizing that each of the political parties paid huge amount of money in the process of registration and wondered how INEC would deregister them after collecting such huge resources from them.
Meanwhile, the state chairman of the PDP, Bro. Felix Obua has described the deregistration of some political parties by the INEC as a welcomed development, stressing that it was right for the electoral body to deregister parties that fall short of approved condition for continued existence as a political party.
