Edo 2020: Rivers Tops Zonal Elimination …Set To Reclaim First Position
Rivers State will clinch the first position in the forth-coming National Sports Festival tagged Edo 2020. Festival Secretary of Rivers State Sports Council, Mr. Chioma Christopher who made this told our correspondent after the South-South Zonal elimination held in Asaba, Delta State said in 2020, Rivers State will bounce back to their first position which had eluded them in the past two festivals.
Christopher hinted that the state will participate in 33 sports events but if the traditional sports is to be split, to show case 38 sports, pointing out that despite the fact that they are not in camp yet, he was optimistic that the council would make the state proud.
He disclosed that the Governor of Rivers State, Chief Nyesom Wike is doing his best in terms of provision of equipments and facilities, and that they are ready to compliment his efforts in their performances in “Edo 2020”, from March 20 – April 2, in Benin City.
On their level of performance at the recently concluded South-South Zonal elimination held in Asaba, Delta State, the Festival Secretary who is also the spokesman of the Sports Council noted that they performed well in the team games and will do better in the National Sports Festival proper.
Chioma hinted that out of nine team games which they participated in at the zonal eliminations, they lost in football and Hockey only.
“We performed fantastically that we never had it this way because we qualify for five team games in male and female. Automatically, we are going for the festival proper with 13 games which include Volley Ball (male and female), Hand ball (male and female), Abula (male and female) with mixed doubles, with Beach Volley Ball (male and female) while they will feature only male team in Hockey.
He however advised the athletes to keep up the spirit in training as the festival draws near, enjoining them to ensure that they make the state proud at the festival.
It will be recalled that Akwa-Ibom, Bayelsa, Cross River and the host Delta participated in the zonal elimination.
