Winners Emerge In Rexes Chess Tourney
A total of 17 students drawn from the 5 Tertiary Institution of Rivers State competed in the 2nd edition of The Rexes Open Chess Competition held at the Prestigious Port Harcourt Club on Saturday 14th December, 2019.
After a grueling 6th round of Deft display,
Mr. Okiridu Benson of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Rivers State emerged winner while, Ibiso Boma of Ken Saro-wiwa Polytechnic emerged second.
Mr. Boma-Sam Raphael of Rivers State University was third.
The female Category was won by Miss Eunice Ajanwachukwu of Rivers State University while Ms Ibilate Batubo of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Constance Powers of Rivers State University and Vivian Ikpendu of University of Port Harcourt and Chiamaka Madu also of Rivers State University shared a combined 2nd position.
The winner Mr. Benson and other participants went home with prizes and certificates of participation.
Mr. Da-Opikuro Dawariboko won the novelty game.
While declaring the game open, the President of The Rexes, Rexon Konipirim Tom-George, promised that the Chess competition will be an annual event and enjoined participants to be good ambassadors by shunning all antisocial behavior preach the Game of Chess.
He expressed hope that the Game of Chess will become popular again adding that the competition would produce world beaters in the near future.
He also thanked Port Harcourt Club for providing a very conducive venue for the games.
