AFCON 2019: Nigeria Prepares To Demolish Cameroon …To Pick Q-Final Ticket

The 32rd African Cup Of Nations (AFCON) will enter the knockout stages tomorrow. Nigeria’s Super Eagles who were first to qualify to the round of 16 after defeating Burudi and Guinea 1-0 each suffered defeat in the hands of Madagascar. Madagascar defeated the Super Eagles 2-0 in the final group match, thereby leading the group with 7 points.

Super Eagles who are in second position with six points and zero goal difference will take on defending champions,  Cameroon in round 16 on Saturday. Cameroon in group F ended with 5 points, equal to Ghana but occupied the second position based on goal difference.

Coach Gernet Rohr of Nigeria who is satisfied with the six points gambled with the team in terms of selection.

It would be noted that Captain John Mikel Obi a late call up is not fit in this competition, hence putting much pressure on the team. Now that Nigeria is to take on Cameroon; would Mikel be given his rightful role to play as defensive midfielder or allowed to watch the team on the bench if really they want to have a good game against Cameroon.

It would be recalled that Mikel was substituted in the 57th minutes of play against Burundi before the Eagles took over the game and won, and in their last game, he was substituted after the damage was done in the 59th minute.

Moreso, Super Eagles players lack communication and most times played individual and selfish football. In their second game against Guinea, Eagles had chances to score more than a goal. Ighalo and assistant Captain Musa should understand themselves as professionals. First choice goal keeper, Akpeyi should be more confident of himself on the pitch or Ezenwa should continue; but there should be communication between the defenders and goal keepers.

Arsenal Forward Iwobi should make his good dribbling runs and distribute the ball to the top attackers (Ighalo and Musa) while Ndidi, Etebo and others checkmate Yaya Banana, AdreAnguissa, Stephane Bahokon and others.

Coach Rohr and his technical crew should work on the team knowing well that Cameroon have not conceded any goal in this tournament. So far in group A, the host country Egypt who have majority home based players won all their matches without conceding a goal, including Group C leaders Algeria.
