AFCON 2019: Nigeria Beat Guinea 1-0 …Qualifies For Round Of 16 Round Qualification. Manasseh Paul-Worika
The Super Eagles of Nigeria have emerged the first team to book a place in the round of 16 at the on-going 32nd Africa Cups of nations in Egypt.
Kenneth Omerou in the 73rd minute scored the only goal against the Syli Stars of Guinea in their second group B match played at the Alexandria Stadium, yesterday.
The Guineans started the game in a bright and superlative note that caused panic for the Super Eagles backline, but it was Nigeria’s Alex Iwobi who created the first real chance in the 37th minute of the game when he forced a brilliant save from Guinean goal keeper, Ibrahim Kone just before the interval.
The Nigeria team began the second half with so much pace and precision as Alex Iwobi’s shot in the 60th minute was parried away by the Guinean shot-stopper.
The Super Eagles were on track to progress to the Round of 16 with the match petering out for a draw until Kenneth Omerou nodded home a corner kick from Moses Simon in the 73rd minute.
Thanks to Omerou’s header, Nigeria has now qualified for the knock-out stages with a game to spare. They will face Madagascar on Saturday to wrap up the group stage.
The Vortex sports gathered that Nigeria had 48% of the ball possession while Guinea had 52%.
