Rivers NLC Election Holds Today …Urombo In Stiff Contest
The stage is set for the election of new executives to pilot the affairs of the Nigeria labour Congress (NLC) in Rivers State.
The Vortex correspondent gathered that the election will take place today at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt.
Our correspondent also learnt that the incumbent chairperson, Mrs. Beatrice Itubo of Medical and Health Workers Union and Comrade Henry Urombo of Amalganated Union of Public corporations, Civil Service Technical and Recreational Services Employees (AUPCTRE) are vying for the state chairmanship position of the union.
It was further gathered that a total of 405 delegates of affiliate union are expected to cast their votes for candidates of their choice during the election.
According to a source, every necessary arrangement has been put in place for a hitch-free and transparent election.
Some union members who spoke with The Vortex correspondent on annominity however tipped Comrade Henry Urombo to be the next NLC Rivers State Council helmsman.
The union members said they based their options on the fact that the incumbent, Mrs Itubo has etired since October 2018 and can no longer represent the interest of the entire workforce in the state effectively, as organizing secretary of her union at the national level and as member of Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) Rivers State council.
They alleged that as a retiree, she has no constitutional powers or backing to re-contest for the chairmanship of the state NLC, the umbrella body of all civil servants and those in corporate and private organizations affiliated to the body.
They maintained that Henry Orombo as State Chairman of AUPCTRE made a lot of reforms before attaining the office of National Treasurer of the union.
“He has so many years to serve in the service. He knows the problems the civil servants are facing especially none promotion, none implementation of both promotion and yearly increment of workers’ salary, which are being stagnated by the state government.
Because he is also affected, and it given the opportunity will do better than the present leadership of NLC in Rivers State”, they asserted.
But the incumbent chairperson, Mrs. Beatrice Itubo is claiming that with her new place of work, she is qualified to contest the election and expressed optimism that nothing will stop her from occupying the seat again with God on her side, because her antecedents speaks volume in the state.
