Recreational activities at the Port Harcourt Boat Club, Marcoba, Rivers State had been grounded. A source told The Vortex correspondent that the place stopped functioning since 2013.

Although no reason was given for the non-functional of the club, our correspondent observed that the deplorable condition of the road leading to the club as well as activities of sea pirates and militants are reasons why members stopped attending club activities.

It was gathered that the club is currently used as a parking lot for people travelling to some riverine communities.

The Vortex correspondent further learnt that all the workers at the club had been sent packing except a security guard.

When contacted, some old members of the club who pleaded anonymity blamed the situation on the state of the road and the militant activities for the club not functioning.

According to them, despite the presence of the Nigerian Navy, there are security challenges on the sea, adding that this poses danger to members as they mostly go on boat cruise as part of the recreational sports.

The members noted that although some are eager to attend the club activities, they have to shelve such plans until the state government fixes the road.

They asserted that security of club members was paramount as most of them are scared of even going to secure their boats to safer and more conducive environment, adding that as soon as things improve, they would resuscitate the club to its former glory.

Efforts to speak with the last President of the club proved abortive as the old members said they cannot even remember the President or members of his executives any longer.
