Rivers SWAN Honours Eminent Nigerians …Award Winner Dedicates Honour To Late Wife

Eminent Nigerians including Rivers State governor, Nyesom Wike, former football international, Barr. Adokiye Amiesimaka, Rivers State Sports Commissioner, Hon. Boma Iyaye and the National Chairman of Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), Mr. Honor Sirawo were among over 40 persons conferred with various awards at the 2018 award ceremony organised by Rivers State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Port Harcourt.

Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State, was conferred with the best sports friendly Governor award for 2018, Chief Felix Obua, Chairman of Go-Round Football Club, HRH, Diamond Tobin West, President Port Harcourt Club 1928, among others were among personalities that bagged Merit Awards at the ceremony.

 Ten others made up of present and past members of the Sports Writers Association including a former General Manager of Rivers State Newspaper Corporation and former Chairman of the Rivers SWAN, Mr. Celestine Ogolo all received the veteran awards, while The Sports Writer of the year was won by Tonye Orabere of The Tide Newspaper.

Sema Abaku of Waves FM carted away the award for Sports Presenter of the year (Radio) and Sopiriala Jaja of RSTV won the TV Sports Presenter of the year.  Others included, Sports Editor of the year awarded to Gabriel Nwanetanya of The Tide Newspaper, Kevin of Blog Sports bagged the Blogger of the year, Carl Orakwe, Sports Analyst of the year (Broadcast Media) and Kiadum Edookor of The Tide as Grassroots Sports Writer of the year while Sunday Tunde Braimoh won the Sports Photographer of the year.

Commissioner of sports, Hon. Boma Iyaye who represented Governor Nyesom Wike at the event commended the Association for reviving the yearly sports award and gave the pledge that the Ministry will foot the bills for the organization of next sports award by the Association.

Acting chairman of Rivers SWAN, Sonny Uboh said the event was organised to honour and appreciate individuals who have made various contributions to the promotion of Sports in the State.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Chapter of the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN), rolled out the carpets in recognition of its members and patrons who contributed to sports development in 2018.

The winner of the 2018 Rivers State Sports Writer of the Year Award, Comrade Tonye Orabere has dedicated the award to his late wife, Mrs. Salome Tonye Orabere for her support, understanding and tolerance.

Comrade Orabere who disclosed this to The Vortex Sports correspondent in Port Harcourt, said his late wife, was instrumental to the success story but regretted that she was not alive to celebrate the award with him and the family.

He opined that it was a big honour done him by his colleagues who discovered his potentials and professional calling to bestow him with the award as the Best Sports Writer of the Year 2018 in Rivers State, saying “It was massive to me”. “I must tell you if your wife did not support you in whatever thing you are doing, you can’t succeed, but my regrets is that she was not alive to see this”.

The award winner however noted that the Association in Rivers State was not able to organize the award night for 15years primarily due to lack of funds.

“I can also say that the past leadership of the Association were not proactive as it concerns administration”, he asserted, pointing out that they lack administrative skills and initiative capability of taking Rivers SWAN to the next level”.

According to him, “In the area of the award night, it was a huge success, good organization and well attended as members were excited, describing the event as a Christmas Day and appealed that it should be organized annually.
