Man Set Ablaze …As Cultists Clash In Alakahia
Sound of guns rent the air as clash by cult groups in Alakahia community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, threw the community into panic.
The shootings have ensued when a suspected member of one of the cult groups, identified as Ibeh, was set ablaze by a rival group.
It was gathered that Ibeh had been terrorising the area after his father’s death led to a chieftaincy tussle in the community.
Not satisfied with the killing of their member, Ibeh’s group reportedly went into the streets where some of their rivals were residing and engaged them in a shootout.
It was gathered that the entire community was deserted during the gun duel, which happened around 10.30am, even as residents took to their heels in order to avoid being hit by bullets.
An eyewitness said the crossfire lasted for more than 15 minutes as residents locked themselves indoors and only came out after the heat had subsided.
It was learnt that a team of policemen, who came in later, left without making any arrest as those involved in the shootout had stopped when they learnt that the police were around.
A source from the area said, “The sound of the gunshots was deafening; it was as if the entire community was at war. Nobody came out as the cult boys continued to shoot non-stop. The police came in and when the cult members noticed this, the shooting stopped.
“The streets in Alakahia are currently empty after the cult clash about 30 minutes ago. I learnt that a member of one of the cult groups was killed and in retaliation, some cult boys stormed the area and began to shoot at suspected rival cult members. As I speak, the shooting has stopped, but the place has been deserted. The police are around now, but I don’t think any arrest has been made, because the police came in after the shooting.”, the source added.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Nnamdi Omoni, who confirmed the incident, said the police were investigating the matter.
