Diete-Spiff Tells FG To Stop Gas Flaring In Niger Delta
The first Military Governor of old Rivers State and Amanyanabo of Twon Brass in Bayelsa State, King Alfred Diete-Spiff has called on the Federal Government to stop gas flaring as it is killing the people of Rivers State and Niger Delta in general.
Diete-Spiff who made the call in an interview with Journalists at Hotel Presidential, Port Harcourt, Saturday said the people were dying as a result of cancer related diseases from the food, fish, water and the air they breathe.
He lamented that the amount of sooth in Port Harcourt and everywhere is alarming and warned that if nothing was done immediately it would be a national calamity. He called for the setting up of strategic modular refineries and industries to curb the menace.
According to him, modular refineries are not for the big boys but for the small boys, stressing that it is not buying and selling but must be for prime producers as things need to be restructured.
The former military governor asserted that it is time for action as all the creeks have been covered with petroleum products and there is neither fish nor periwinkle for the people to eat due to the polluted environment caused by gas flaring and other activities of petroleum products.
“Anybody eating fish could contact cancer and there are lots of cancer patients dying every day except those with cancer preventive device”.
He further appealed to the people of the area to avoid division but to speak with one voice, stating that if given the opportunity, gas flaring could be stopped within one year in the area.
