‘Rivers Under Grip Of Gang Leaders’

An elder statesman in Rivers State, Chief Albert Horsfall has condemned the prevailing political tension in the state caused by the abrupt suspension of the election process in the state by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Addressing the media on the outcome of the meeting of Rivers Elders Forum (REF) which was convened to chart the way forward Chief Horsfall said the state has over the years been governed by persons he described as cult gang leaders.

According to the Elder statesman and Chairman of the forum these leaders have piloted the affairs of the state using violence occasioned by cult rivalries. He said the leaders have survived by setting each group against the other, which he added has pushed the state on the downward slide, compared to its contemporaries in the federation.

The former Director, State Security Services, stated that the time has come for the people of the state to stand up, take their destiny in their hands and remove these people he described as crooked  perpetuating violence and killings in the State.

Horsfall who described the governorship and state Assembly election of March 9, as a sham, regretted that all attempt made by the forum to bring the two feuding leaders in the state to a negotiation table before the election was not successful.

He said while the incumbent, Governor Nyesom Wike responded positively to letters written to him on the meeting, former Governor, Chibuike Amaechi failed to respond to the invitations.

The elder statesman berated the two leaders for taking Rivers people for a ride, insisting that the former Governor and Minister of Transportation cannot be too big to answer to elders call to discuss the peace of the state.

The former security officer said the election were not properly and fairly conducted in the state as according to him the two political gladiators rather than allowing free and fair election to hold, were busy writing fake election results in a bid to foreclose the choice of the people of the state.

On the multiplicity of several elders forums in the state, Horsfall said the Rivers Elders Forum was the only authentic forum in the state which he added is not sponsored by the state government.

He however said the forum has resolved to set up a committee of elders to come up with the way forward in the ensuing tension in the state.
