Army Blasts INEC Over Indicting Report
The Nigerian Army has taken on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) over its position as regards the governorship election in Rivers State.
According to a statement issued by the Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 6 Division, Col Aminu Illyasu, the Nigerian Army accused INEC’s fact finding committee of publishing a one-sided report that did not take into full account the role the military played in assisting the electoral umpire to execute its duties in Rivers State.
The Army also faulted the role played by some operatives of the Nigeria Police in Rivers State elections and demanded a full investigation by the leadership of the police force.
The Army alleged that at the Obio/Akpor collation centre, Governor Wike’s security aides shot one captain Salami and another officer both of whom had serious injurious and were hospitalized adding that the fact finding committee did not reflect the incident in its report.
However, this allegation has been denied by the Rivers State Government in a statement by the Commissioner of Information and Communication, Emma Okah.
Okah said the Army was only trying to save its face having allegedly entangled itself in an unprofessional act. He accused the Army of lying against Governor Wike, saying the mandate of the Rivers people given to Wike cannot be manipulated, nor tampered with.
