Abductions: Police Declare Emergency …On East-West Road Polycarp Nwaeke
Worried by incessant kidnapping and hijacking of commercial buses, the Rivers State Police Command has declared a state of emergency on the Rumuji-Ndele-Rumuekpe axis of East-West Road.
Spokesman of the Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, who disclosed this in Port Harcourt, said the police were worried over the embarrassing rate of crime in the area.
He said the command has adopted effective strategies to curtail the situation.
One of the strategies, according to him was the massive deployment of both plain and uniformed officers to the area.
The police image maker assured that the strategies will yield positive result, stressing that kidnapping and bus hijacking will soon be a thing of the past.
On the allegation that police were colluding with criminals to perpetrate the crimes, Omoni said the command has launched an investigation into the activities of police men and assured that any one fingered in the matter would be dealt with.
Meanwhile, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Rivers State has decried the incessant hijacking and killing of their members along the East-West Road.
Deputy Chairman of NURTW, Monday Elizar while expressing worry over the incident, appealed to the Rivers State Government to liaise with the army and deploy them to the area to stop the menace, stating that it had gone beyond the capacity of the police.
It would be recalled that there had been incessant hijacking of commercial buses, kidnapping and killings along Rumuji, Ndele and Rumuekpe axis of the East-West Road, the recent being the hijacking of a commercial vehicle, killing of its driver after and abduction of the passengers.
