King Jaja Honours Wike, Odili, Shagari …At 15th Coronation Anniversary

New Year festivities in the ancient Opobo Kingdom featured the conferment of honours on three distinguished Nigerians by the Amanyanabo of Opobo Kingdom, His Majesty, King Dandeson Douglas Jaja, Jeki V, to mark his 15th coronation anniversary.

Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike, former Governor Peter Odili and former President Shehu Shagari were honoured at the event. While Governor Wike and Late Shagari received the King Jaja’s Manilla Tree award, the highest title of Opobo Kingdom, former Governor Peter Odili received the Golden Key of Opobo Kingdom.

Dr. Odili had earlier been decorated with the King Jaja Manilla Tree award when he announced the construction of the road to link Opobo/Nkoro LGA and Andoni LGA to mainland Rivers State in 2006.

Governor Wike was honoured for bringing the road project to fruition in December 2018 while Alhaji Shagari received a posthumous award for approving the sand-filling and embankment of Opobo in 1980-1982.

The awardees were represented by officials of the Rivers State Government. While the Head of Service, Barr. Rufus Godwins received the Governor’s award, the Commissioner for Education, Dr. Tamunosisi Gogo Jaja received the Golden Key on behalf of former Governor Odili.

The Opobo Kingdom Awards was inaugurated in 2006 to project the fundamental values of traditional Ibani society.

The recipients are people whose footprints are worthy to be emulated as they are expected to continue to make popular in Opobo and the larger society, the defining qualities of old Ibani society, such as talent, leadership, enterprise and diligence, fairness, integrity and dignity that inspired the kingdom to claim a place of distinction as one of the leading City-States of the Old Oil Rivers territory.

A panel set up by the Amanyanabo-in-Council selects candidates within and outside Opobo and from different areas of engagement for the awards, in furtherance of the promise by the Amanyanabo during the first anniversary of his coronation on January 3, 2005, to renew the land and the people through a framework that makes people participate in recreating greatness in a sustainable way for the kingdom.
